What IS life and where does it come from? As the search for life in the outer cosmos continues so begins the search for life within our own biology. Tiny machines with the ability to replicate and evolve will be the life we find. This is not a joke.

I'd hope this idea of theirs gets fleshed out. Certainly some spooky potential here.

A great article and I'm glad it was published. Unfortunately the scope of the experiment is quite small and the actuality of supposed dangers from carbon nanotubes has yet to be fully understood. My simple logic is this: any particles (which the body dispose of) entering the body are going to cause damage either through direct destruction or disruption of other systems (much like cholestorol) This is simple logic even I determined to be true before I did the majority of my nano-technology research. It's only logical to say that nano-particles like carbon nanotubes, entering the body could be difficult to get out. The study was far from conclusive not only because they stopped after a week (wtf?) and because it was somehow unrealistic in terms of reality. It's very possible the lungs or other parts of the respiratory system would take care of the particle long before I got to the outer walls. Anyone heard of sneezing?? Anyways, I'd say it's great to see an article talking about the risks of such technology and perhaps as time goes on we can see more articles based on more substantial studies.

Oh, the fact that the study ended after a week was actually only reported in the CBC article on the same study. Found here

This animated demonstration is not portraying what is possible now but what is possible when we start understanding the many ways matter can be manipulated at the nano-scale. Sure only few of these features have real tangible foundational evidence now and this will quickly change. With more and more money being invested in our understanding of matter at this level surely we will produce great and flexible tools for our benefit.

Wow! This is a truly groundbreaking substance if it can do what it says it does. Tourneqets and bandages will only work better if bleeding can be stopped quickly. This has great military AND civilian potential.

Very nice! We could always use more nanomachines. This one can do very little so far and it's a great start.

Progressing nicely. Manipulations on the nano-scale will be more and more essential for all of our tiny engineering products.
