The Raw Story | Marines ignore Afghan opium so as not to upset locals

Ignoring the poppies: Good idea! It would be like soldiers coming here to Canada and destroying our grain crops and our livestock. Opium is their livelyhood!

On another note... How long have we been "fighting" the Taliban? Aren't they supposed to be some rag tag group with old technology wearing dresses? One word comes to mind: Incompetence. I might bite my tongue later for that, oh well.

"Eat food. Mostly plants. Not too much" Claims author Michael Pollen. Greed and convenience are too values that high jack our health and trick it into eating highly processed, preserved, and long-term toxic foods. 80% of the stuff in the Super Market isn't FOOD! I like the author's stance and I can imagine this this interview is a great substitute if you don't have time to read books on the subject.

Our current capitalism with little safe-gaurds or encouragements for the little guy, breeds Corporate Hydras waiting to eat up anything it can! Cut off one head and it's got four more. This kind of arrangement drains wealth from the people into the hands of the elite.

New Limits to Growth Revive Malthusian Fears - WSJ.com

From the page:
"Dennis Meadows, one of the authors of "The Limits to Growth," says the book was too optimistic in one respect. The authors assumed that if humans stopped harming the environment, it would recover slowly. Today, he says, some climate-change models suggest that once tipping points are passed, environmental catastrophe may be inevitable even "if you quit damaging the environment."

"One danger is that governments, rather than searching for global solutions to resource constraints, will concentrate on grabbing share."

New technology could help ease the resource crunch. Advances in agriculture, desalination and the clean production of electricity, among other things, would help."

"But Mr. Stiglitz, the economist, contends that consumers eventually will have to change their behavior even more than then did after the 1970s oil shock. He says the world's traditional definitions and measures of economic progress -- based on producing and consuming ever more -- may have to be rethought."

Many industrialized and now developing countries are following our footsteps on the road to consumerism. The have-nots want what they've never had the opportunity to have until now! Life is easy as a consumer until observation and simple logic comes full circle. Energy at this point isn't unlimited and most of our products come from mostly non-renewable resources or those which take copious amounts of energy to re-use.

I'm not quite sure we needed a study to figure this one out... There are plenty of things people don't want to believe even though that they believe it's POSSIBLE with a high level of accuracy. I call this abuse.

Let's GET OFF COMBUSTIBLE FUELS! Ethanol has certainly proven NOT be to the answer as food prices continue to go up and up. If we want fuel let us find a multipurpose plant that's NOT food and doesn't require oil to grow. We need to get some Systems thinkers in the governments WORLDWIDE. From the page: "Food costs worldwide spiked 23 percent from 2006 to 2007, according to the FAO. Grains went up 42 percent, oils 50 percent and dairy 80 percent."

It's true. I predict the amount of luxury shopping (and luxuries go far beyond diamonds) will go down and people will still need to buy all the necessities. Food, basic clothing, and housing will continue to be good markets.

Every once in a while I come across information that does an effective job of clarifying very unpopular and truthful relationships. These are the relationships between all the parts of our factory-lifestyle. She really knows how to communicate clearly about the big issues in our current economic-consumption system. Simple and clear, in basic English so even a 10 year old could understand if he watched the video a couple of times...

Good Work. I've been thinking/feeling this meem for many years and she's put it all in one silver platter package for everyone to take into consideration. It's beautiful that when someone says the word "system" especially in regard to the current society and it's choice, that everyone simply understands.
